Job Description

Position Summary:

Helpers assist mechanics with their key roles and responsibilities. Must demonstrate proven ability to perform all tasks of 2nd class helper and show desire to learn new tasks.

Key Roles & Responsibilities:

Performance Related

  • 12 months without any written warnings for rules violation

  • Must have a good performance evaluation

  • Able to report to work on time each day and have good attendance record

  • Able to work overtime when required

  • Able to work with others and in a team

Process/Procedure related

  • Ability to comprehend processes and procedures

  • Able to understand and follow safety rules

  • Have a working understanding of Tag Out and Lock Tag out programs

  • Know and understand basic math

  • Able to read and write.

  • Assist shop personnel in accomplishing assigned tasks.

  • Have a working knowledge of the WAF (Work Authorization Forms) and its process

  • Have a basic understand of functional theory based on assigned tradeHave a general understanding of naval vessel compartment number systems and related vessel terminology

Equipment Related

  • Begin to obtain knowledge of shop equipment / maintenance of equipment

  • Begin a hand tool collection. Basic knowledge and use of hand tools.

  • Able to work around heavy equipment

  • Be familiar with uses of pneumatic, hydraulic and electric power tools

Be able to demonstrate the proper use of an electrical basic multi meter

Must have a basic working knowledge and be able to assist in the installation of the follow system and or components:

  • Equipment Identification

  • Cable types

  • Terminal Tubes/Kick pipes

  • Layout fabricate electrical

  • Multi cable transits (MCT)

  • Lighting

  • Material handling

  • Have a basic understanding of Ohms Law

  • Have a good understanding of Electrical Safety

  • Be able to get CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) Certified

Required Skills and Education

Minimum Education: High School Diploma/GED

Minimum Relevant Experience: 6 months to 1 yr.

  • Must be able to read, write and comprehend simple instructions

  • Must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral or diagram form

  • Must be able to calculate and understand units of measure, including fractions and decimals

  • Must know how to measure using a scale and tape measure

  • Must be able to use specified tools required tools as determined by the shop management

  • Must be able to wear proper PPE

  • Maintain job site cleanliness

  • Able to work at heights (if applicable to trade)

  • Be able to work off scaffolding (if applicable to trade)

  • Able to work with hands

  • Basic material identification skills

  • Make measurements to 1/16" using measuring tape or ruler. (Excludes labor shop)

  • Basic blueprint reading (Excludes labor shop)
