BAE Systems Outside Machinist 1st Class Mechanic in Norfolk, Virginia
The First Class Mechanic performs a variety of skilled mechanical duties involving deck machinery, engine room work, general dock, rudders, shafting, propeller work, and testing. The First Class Mechanic will have working knowledge of equipment operation for assembly, installation and testing; records work performed and follows specified safety policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities & Functional Knowledge:
This list is representative of the key areas of responsibility and functional knowledge required of a first class mechanic in the Outside Machinist shop. A first class mechanic must demonstrate an advanced knowledge of the skills, functional knowledge and abilities required to perform tasks in these and related areas of responsibility.
Advanced knowledge means that the mechanic understands how to perform tasks in these categories (including, but not limited to, the specific tasks identified below) and is able to complete them independently and teach others how to complete the tasks. This also means that the mechanic has the necessary level of knowledge of the equipment, protective gear, and machinery required to complete these tasks. A first class mechanic also is expected to strategize independently and problem-solve as appropriate.
General Machinist Knowledge
Use of measuring devices (rulers, micrometers, dial indicators, depth mics, scales, etc.)
Use of trade hand tools
Use of power tools (electric drills, saws, grinders, drill presses, etc.)
Read advanced blueprints
Care and protection of customer equipment to include wrapping and protection equipment with various materials (wood, plastic, rubber, etc.)
General Knowledge of Ship Systems (know and overhaul the following systems)
Stationary and Portable Power Tool Operation
Identify the different types of valves to include safety valves, globe valves, gate valves, etc.
Know applications of different valve types and understand what systems it is defined for
Use of operation valves
Remove and replace valves
Repair and general overhaul of valves
Reach Rods/ Valve Operators
Knowledgeable regarding different types of rods and valve operators
Knowledgeable regarding the different parts to include rods, universal joint, hand wheels, etc.
Understand the different types and usage of reach rods and valve operators
Set reach rods and valve operators up for operation
Knowledgeable regarding pump overhauls and parts
Remove and reinstall pump
Proficient in the performance of the pump alignment process to include one of the following:
Face and rim
Indicator Revers method
Proficient in the repairs of the following types of deck machinery:
Sliding Pad Eye
Repair, clean, remove and install deck machinery
Work with and operate rudders
Knowledgeable regarding rudder parts
Remove and reinstall rudders
Knowledgeable regarding parts of a shaft (liners, journals, etc.)
Remove, install and repair shafts
Line Shaft Bearings
Knowledgeable regarding line shaft bearings
Remove, repair and install line shaft bearings
Know the differences between the types of propellers (Fixed and Variable Pitched)
Knowledgeable regarding the parts of a propeller
Repair, remove, install and test propellers
Controllable Pitch Propeller Systems
Knowledgeable regarding operations and parts
Repair, install and test systems
Required Skills and Education
Minimum education requirements: High school diploma/GED.
Minimum relevant experience: 7 to 8 yrs.
Practical Theory Requirements:
A first class mechanic must demonstrate an advanced understanding of repairs to various shipboard equipment. Knowledge of job planning and executing, proper tool selection, assisting in training of other junior mechanics, helpers and handypersons with minimal supervision.
Must be able to read, write and comprehend simple instructions
Must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral or diagram form
Must be able to calculate and understand units of measure, including fractions and decimals
Must know how to measure using a scale and tape measure
Must be able to wear applicable PPE (Hard hat, safety goggles, gloves, steel toes shoes, ear protection)
Must be able to obtain a government access badge.
